Stocks futures were modestly mixed early in the premarket session. Dow futures were down 145 points, Nasdaq futures up 57 points, and S&P futures down 5 points. Stocks in Asian markets ended mixed in their session overnight.

WTI crude oil futures at $92.15/barrel. up 2.08%.

Amazon reported a blowout quarter, that sent shares rocketing higher.

What About The Asian And European Markets?

Major Asian markets ended mixed. Japan (Nikkei 225) up 0.73%, Shanghai down 0.19%, Hong Kong (Hang Seng) gained up 3.23%.

Major European markets ended with losses today. German (DAX) fell1.75%, France CAC 40 lost 0.77%, London FTSE 100 down 0.17%.


Market And Sector Dynamics

Markets got off to a mixed start this morning, with the Dow down 111 points, Nasdaq gained 57 points, and S&P gained 1 point. WTI crude oil was positive at the open, at $92.01/barrel, up 1.93%, and the US 10 Year Bond Yield jumped 7.4 basis points, to 1.901%.


After a depressing morning session, under pressure from mixed quarterly earnings reports from a few corporate giants. FaceBook disappointed investors earlier in the week, while Amazon reported a blowout earning quarter that sent its shares rocketing higher. Markets recovered by mid-afternoon and climbed higher into the close. While the Dow faded all its gains in the last minute of trading, the Nasdaq and S&P held on to much of their earlier gains.


Stocks were positive but mostly balanced in today's trading. Six of the eleven S&P sectors ended today in negative territory, led by Basic Materials, Real Estate, Consumer Staples, Industrials, Utilities, and Healthcare. Consumer Discretionary, Financials, Energy, Technology, and Communication Services ended the session higher.


Factors Influencing Today's Market


  • Shares of Amazon rocketed higher after the company reported a blowout quarter.

  • US 10 Year Bond today at 1.196%, up 4.32%.

  • WTI crude oil closed the session at $92.31/barrel, up 2.26%.

  • Last week's Baker Hughes US Oil Rig count rose 2 to 497 total.

Market Close Volume Traded And Advance Decline Ratio

Markets ended mixed in today's session. The Dow lost a modest 21.42 points, Nasdaq gained 212.19 points, and S&P gained 23.09 points. Total NYSE volume traded a modest 4.67 billion shares. Declining shares outpaced Advancing shares by 1.19:1.
