Stock futures were down early in the premarket. Dow futures were down 136 points, Nasdaq down 70 points, and the S&P was down 20 points. The Feds begin their September policy meeting today. Major Asian markets closed with gains.

What About The Asian And European Markets?

Major Asian markets closed with gains. Japan (Nikkei 225) up 0.44%, Shanghai up 0.22%, Hong Kong (Hang Seng) up 1.30%.

Major European markets ended lower. German (DAX) lost 1.03%, France CAC 40 down 1.35%, London FTSE 100 down 0.61%.

Market And Sector Dynamics

Markets opened modestly lower today. The Dow was down 277 points, Nasdaq was down 90 points, and the S&P was down 36 points.


Markets traded in negative territory in today's session, as the Fed/FOMC began its September policy meeting. Investors seemed resigned to wait for the Feds' decision, expected to be announced tomorrow.


All eleven S&P sectors ended in the red, led by Real Estate, Basic Materials, Consumer Discretionary, Communication Services, Financials, Utilities, Industrials, Healthcare, Energy, Consumer Staples, and Technology.

Factors Influencing Today's Market


  • Fed/FOMC policy meeting began today.

  • US 10 Year Bond closed above the 3.5% level today, at 3.569%, up 2.13%

  • WTI crude oil price closed at $85.47/barrel, down 1.95%.

  • August Housing Starts came in a better than expected 1.575 million vs 1.440 million estimated

  • Asian markets ended higher, while European markets were lower.


Market Close Volume Traded And Advance Decline Ratio

US markets ended moderately lower in today's session. The Dow lost 313.45 points, Nasdaq lost 109.97 points, and S&P lost down 43.96 points. Total NYSE volume traded was a modest 4.06 billion shares. Declining shares outpaced Advancing shares by 4.73:1.
