US stock futures were modestly positive early in the premarket. Dow futures up 36 points, Nasdaq futures up 90 points, and S&P up 13 points.

What About The Asian And European Markets?

Major Asian markets traded lower today. Japan (Nikkei 225) down 0.30%, Shanghai down 0.47%, Hong Kong (Hang Seng) down 1.29%.

Major European markets were all lower. German (DAX) down 0.18%, France CAC 40 down 0.21%, London FTSE 100 down 0.48%.

Market And Sector Dynamics

Stocks were mixed at the open, with the Dow down 20 points, Nasdaq up 25 points, and the S&P up 9 points. WTI crude oil jumped a modest 0.57% to $78.81/barrel, and the US 10 Year Bond was unchanged at 1.604%.


The Dow traded in the red for the entire trading session. At the low the Dow was down 255 points shortly after 10:00 AM., before it turned around and moved back toward the flat line, and hovered just below during the afternoon session.


Shares of chipmaker Nvidia, soared higher today after announcing strong third quarter performance after the closing bell yesterday.


In another down Dow day, seven of the eleven S&P sectors ended with losses today, led by Utilities, Energy, Financials, Basic Materials, Consumer Staples, Industrials, and Communication Services. Consumer Discretionary, Technology, Healthcare, and Real Estate ended higher.


Factors Influencing Today's Market


  • Strong quarterly earnings results from Nvidia, sent shares of the company soaring higher today.

  • This week's Initial Jobless Claims report showed 268,000 new claims for unemployment benefits.

  • US 10 Year Bond Yield closed at 1.587%, up 0.11%.

  • WTI crude oil closed today at $78.31/barrel, down 0.06%.

Market Close Volume Traded And Advance Decline Ratio


At the end of trading today, markets were mixed. The Dow lost 60.10 points, Nasdaq gained 72.14 points, and the S&P rose 15.87 points. Total NYSE volume traded, a modest 4.24 billion shares. Declining shares outpaced Advancing shares by 1.88:1.
