US stock futures are mixed this morning, with Dow futures down 16 points, Nasdaq futures up 57 points, and S&P futures up 6 points. Asian markets closed with mild losses overnight.

WTI crude oil futures at $68.58/barrel, down 0.94%.

What About The Asian And European Markets?

Major Asian markets were lower in their sessions. Japan (Nikkei 225) down 0.19%, Shanghai down 0.54%, Hong Kong (Hang Seng) down down 0.02%.

Major European markets ended mixed. German (DAX) lost 0.23%, France CAC 40 up 0.11%, London FTSE 100 up 0.25%.

Market And Sector Dynamics

Markets opened mostly flat, with the Dow down 18 points, Nasdaq up 64 points, and the S&P added 7 points. Investor are still grappling with the strength of the pandemic recovery, the potential threat of rising interest rates and inflation, and its combined effect of US corporate earnings.


The Dow traded below the flat line for the entire session, with the Dow down 165 points shortly before midday. and remained at that level for the rest of the session. The Dow pared those losses, and climbed back almost to the flat line, and remained at the level for the rest of the session and into the close.


In today's session saw six of the eleven S&P sectors closed with gains, led by Consumer Discretionary, Energy, Real Estate, Industrials, Basic Materials, and Technology. Utilities, Consumer Staples, Healthcare, Communication Services, and Financials.


Factors Influencing Today's Market

  • A strong Bureau of Labor April JOLTS (Job Openings) report exceeded expectations at 9.286 million openings vs the 8.123 million openings for March. Showing that as businesses reopen, there is a need for workers.

  • Major Asian markets ended with modest losses in their session. European markets ended mixed.

  • US 10 Year Bond Yield ended today at 1.538%, down 1.95%.

  • WTI crude oil closed today at $70.08/barrel, up 1.23%.


Market Close Volume Traded And Advance Decline Ratio

Stocks were modestly mixed in today's trading. The Dow lost 30.42 points, Nasdaq gained 43.19 points, and the S&P added 0.74 (fraction). Total NYSE volume traded, a modest 4.68 billion shares. Advancing shares outpaced Declining shares by 1.77:1.
